For a librarian job at a medium-sized to large library, you'd most likely need a master's degree in library science. For smaller libraries, that might not be necessary. Depending on where you are, for public libraries you usually need a state certification.

Public school librarians are generally certified by the state similar to the way teachers are. Librarians in private schools might have different requirements.

A good way to start, and get an idea what librarians really do, is to volunteer at a library - volunteers are always needed. You'll find there's a lot more to the job than reading books and checking them in and out.

A knowledge of, and love of, books is highly desirable.

Library science is taught by colleges. To get started you can apply to work at a library. To advance in the field you need to go to school.
