As you can tell you get a variety of answers. States that use the death penalty will be heavier: Texas, FLorida, Ohio mainly. Granted it wouldnt be a death penalty case but still those states are tougher.
So to answer your question; A sentence of 12-30 years sounds to be about right.

Well I find it awkward that you would wnat to write a script like this ...but I'm in Business Law and I basically know a thing or two about the law. So beating up his girlfriend would be a battery which would be up to a 6months and further or bail which would be probably 50,000 dollars. Killing in the hospital would be an assault and manslaguter
so alot of fines and with him being 17 it would depend by the judges ruling of how long he would serve.

Go to your local law library (most law schools will let you use their library, just say you need to access government documents, if they are a government document depositary, they have to let you in). Check the laws for the province that you have set this drama. Things to check are (1) what age do they charge minors as adults; (2) the punishment for assault; (3) the punishment for causing a miscarriage, if different; (4) the punishment for attempted murder. If they only charge him as a minor, for whatever reason, he may be going away until he is 21 or 25, check the provincial rules which may either be in the criminal law or the family law. Good luck. Hopefully you haven't selected Montreal or Quebec as your setting. If so, bon chance.

thats sort of a quandry 17 means not an adult on the domestic assault or the attempted murder or what .. if hes tried as an adult by order of a judge then 30 days and a misdemeanor for the simple assault then for the murder attempt he can do 10 to fifteen .. if they press stalking or gun laws then he could get a life sentence

With liberals in our real-life legal system who love to coddle criminals, it would be pretty accurate to write into your script that he gets off free or with a slap on the wrist, to the dismay and horror of the girl and her family.
Now THAT would make a great movie, because it's so resembles what goes on in the world!
