I bought a '94 Nissan Altima and have put about 5K miles on it. I checked the air filter today and it's perfectly clean. Not even any dust between the folds. What could be going on?

Be thankful...you must live in a clean area.

Five thousand miles is not that much on an air filter. If you drive in mostly clean air, very little dust, then I would expect it to be clean at this point. But if you live on a dirt road or something, I would suspect that there is a leak somewhere that is letting air into the engine between the air filter and engine.

Nothing is wrong here, if you were driving in a dusty inviroment or in a place where there was a lot of polution in the air you would see something, weather is a big factor. It takes longer than 5,000 miles to dirty a air filter, but then again it depends on driving conditions.

It will stay that way for a long time. You probably put highway miles on it right? At least nothing in the country on gravel or anything. I kept my Subaru on the highway for about 50K before I changed the air filter. Good luck.

After 5,000 miles your air filter isn't going to show much dirt. Unless you are driving in extremely dusty and dirty conditions your air filter shouldn't get too dirty too quickly. Air filters can go an average of 6-8k miles before becoming extremely dirty.

You must live in a clean part of the country, or you haven't driven long enough to dirty the filter.

apparenyly the filter was new when you bought the car and you haven't driven on any dusty roads or experienced any dusty conditions since you have had it.
