Lady Godiva, known as The woman who rode through town naked on a horse -
Lady Godiva (Godgyfu or Godgifu in its original spelling) was married to Leofric, the Earl of Mercia, in what is now the United Kingdom. Around the time of 1057, she and Leofric got in a dispute over the taxes he had levied on the growing city of Coventry, and he challenged her to ride naked through the marketplace, promising to ease the tax burden if she did so. Lady Godiva took the challenge and became a local legend. At least, that's how the story goes, a story that began to circulate a century after her death. In the 17th century, the detail was added that Lady Godiva had instructed the townsfolk to stay indoors during her ride, but that a man named Tom peeked at her anyway, hence the term "peeping tom."-

Godiva was a virtuous and religious lady married to a real troll, who was oppressing the heck out of the peasants. She wanted him to stop abusing them and begged him to treat them better. He told her that he would if she would ride a horse naked through the middle of town, thinking that she would never do it.

But she did it, with her long flowing hair covering all the important parts, and all the people in the town came out for her ride but turned their backs so that they would not embarrass her.

If I remember, her trollish hubby was shamed into reforming his act.

Godiva (or Godgifu) (c. 990? – September 10, 1067) became an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman, who, in accordance to legend, rode bare interior the direction of the streets of Coventry in England with a view to learn a remission of the oppressive toll imposed with the aid of her husband on his tenants.

Her husband wanted to impose some oppressive taxes on his tenants. She objected, and he said he wouldn't if she would ride through the town (Coventry, apparently) naked. Luckily, her long hair kept her modesty and her husband didn't tax the population.

British woman wasn't she? Awfully raunchy for the time. This would be the Regency Era, I believe.
