when we realize that we need to solve our own problems and not expect the government to solve them. find out about libertarianism, you'll be impressed. the fact is, the govt. is already to big and cumbersome to solve any problems at all. live your life and be happy, thats all you can do as an individual. ending partisanship requires ending the parties.

You don't understand the American political process. The US Constitution was designed, with it's separation of powers, so that there would be political partisanship. This was so that no political party or person could get enough power to oppress the people.
The other thing you need to understand that there is a fundamental difference of belief as to what will solve our national problems. That is: Conservative or Liberal philosophy. It is impossible for Liberals and Conservatives to agree because we believe different things.
There is the possibility of compromising but for the past 50 years it has been the Conservatives who have been giving in and the Country has shifted remarkably toward the Liberal side of things. During the last 8 years the Conservative votors have woken up and realized that compromise won't work with Liberals and have begun to vote accordingly.

There shoulc\d NEVER be an end to partisanship.
The parties have completely differnet views of the world, what people in a society mean to each other, and the role of govt.
The parties should work as hard as possible to fight the other party andmake the people look at the choices.
What is a "centrist" or "moderate" position? Eliminate half the pollution? Allow half the women to get abortions? Improve half the schools? It doesn't make sense.
Remember, you can't breed a donkey to an elephant.

Patience John H.
The new officials haven't even taken control of their positions yet.
It took a long time to create the problems. It will take some time to address and correct them.
I hope the first three things the government addresses are:
#1. Effectively handling Iraq
#2. Health Care
#3. Immigration
We need to stop all of the heated extreme squabbling and get down to productive debate and intelligent decision making in regard to the future.
America is a great country filled with intelligent, thoughtful, well intentioned citizens. Everything will get better. Look back through history. Every time evil rears its ugly head---goodness prevails.
I have no doubt it will in our lifetime as well. Change takes time.
Peace be with you. Happy New Year! .

The question doesn't make any sense. What are our national problems? Democrats would give you one laundry list of things they don't like, Republicans would give you a different list. Libertarians like me would give you a still different list. Trying to pretend that partisanship is the problem, instead of recognizing that different sorts of people want different things for the country, is naive.

I think now that the Dems have garnered Congress, things will get back on track. Political partisanship was created and exasperated by the the Republican stronghold of the past 12 years. It was a full-tilt hard-ram full-force attempt at life as a Republican for the past 12 years. It didn't work.

I guess that when we all realize that if we start working together then our country is not going to last. I think that the people we elect needs to work together more and forget about their politics and work for the people that elected them.

Hopefully this new year. It's funny how conservatives complain about liberals being too far left when in reality they are the ones who are too far to the right! Most liberals are actually center-left.
