some people have the problem where their eyes stay open when they sleep, and for those with that problem usually encounter problems beginning with dry eye syndrome and can eventually cause worse problems like tearing of the layers on your eyes. There are 5 layers. Once layers begin to tear you start to lose your vision........this is why it is necessary to sleep w/ your eyes shut.

It takes a little muscular effort to keep your eyes open. Try to go to sleep while keeping your hand up in the air, for example.

When we go to sleep our body shuts down for the exception of our heart and brain including the eye lids.

When hypnotists relax their subjects, their eyelids get 'heavy' and close as in sleep. We constantly blink to keep our eyeballs moist and clean off dust, etc. Therefore eyelids likely close when we sleep because the muscles holding them open relax and this avoids the need to blink to keep them moist.
