Hello, Emo Police! You're here to yell at me, aren't you? Yes, I believe the majority of you (that I have encountered) are stereotyping, narrow-minded, falsely informed people who jump on a band for showing the slightest bit of emotion or heartbreak occasionally. I've been Internet-stalked by the anti-emo forces long enough to know that they don't care about the music- if they've heard they're emo, they hate it. Recently someone told me that they've never heard a song by ((insert name of band I like here)), but hate them for being "emo posers," and then went on to suggest that I listen to "real punk." I've made the concious decision to listen to music that I can relate to and has lyrics clever enough to pull me in, and I generally dislike the bands people suggest- yes, all punk or metal that I dislike for the subject matter and whatnot.

Okay, emo police, yell away. I doubt anyone agrees with me on this. There are too many either emos or anti-emos on Y!Answers...

I meant to say all the bands the people suggest are punk or metal. I do like some, but not all, for both subject matter and (mostly) vocals.

Yes, thank you! I'm annoying and I know it, but I don't plan to die anytime soon.

Er, you all realize I was just being sarcastic about something that annoys me? Geez, I had no idea the emo police was so -touchy-.

I hate it how the bands I love are always labeled 'emo poser bands' when their music isn't even 'emo' just because it has some good lyrics that aren't really shallow...Seriously, people should be able to like the music they like, espescially if it does have a good message that might be a little 'emotional' or whatever...but hey, at least someone else on here has a little common sense!

I'm not sure I really understand the question .. I think what you've done is taken this space and used it as a platform, or a blog, to voice your own opinion. Well, that's fine, I guess.
Anyways, I'm happy that you're into emo, but aren't into punk rock. I'm tired of going to a punk rock show and seeing nothing but sweater-wearing emo crybabies. "Oh! Don't bump into me, I might spill my latte!"
Yeah, I'm stereotyping. And yeah, I'm one of those guys who has claimed to hate a band I've never even heard.
See, I know what I like, and what I don't like. I've been told this makes me "closed-minded", but I prefer to think it makes me a straight shooter who doesn't waste his time listening to bullcrap.
By the same token, I've heard some bands that were labeled "emo" and liked them, such as Hot Water Music. So I see the double standard.. if someone broght a Hot Water Music CD to my house and was like "Dude, you gotta hear this emo band!" I woulda kicked em the he11 outta my house for suggesting something so ridiculous. But hearing it on my own for the first time, and digging it, and then having a friend tell me that it was "emo", well, then my opinion became "so what, who cares what it's labeled, it sounds good to me."
I guess "real" punks just hate the *idea* of emo. Getting in touch with your feelings... bleh, my friends would beat me up if I started going off like "man, she broke up with me! Im so heartbroken!".
I dunno if I answered yer question at all, and truth be told I couldve went on longer... I don't know, why can't punks be punks, and emo kids be emo kids, and just stay the he11 out of each other's way? I don't like you, either.

Ok, this is going to be really long and jumbled, and it may not make sense at all places:

Yeah, I get what you're saying.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of emo- at least, not the recent music that's labeled as emo. I haven't actually listened to any of the older, supposedly REAL emo. Regardless, I'd like to think I TRY to be open minded about this sort of thing. It's really not my business what people listen to. I'm sure that I've stereotyped before, but I try to at least explain myself so that it's more a statement of opinion than a stereotype.

I don't like emo because (1) it's too personal for me, and I prefer music that deals with societal issues (or music that makes me laugh, which emo does not), and (2) I'm just not a fan of the way it sounds. Furthermore, I tend to be a bit judgemental about people who consider themselves emo because so far most of the self-proclaimed emos that I've met have wasted my time complaining because, for some reason, they think teen angst is cool. Then again, most people who stereotype themselves to fit into some small box- regardless of the box- irritate me. Despite that, I don't lord myself over every "emo" or emo fan I meet- some of them are pretty cool. And truthfully, the actual issue might be that I'm an extreme introvert, and I refuse to share my emotions, so it kinda creeps me out when other people do.

I'm entitled to my opinion. At the same time, you're entitled to yours. Since I don't know what you're reacting to, I'm not sure if you're reacting to someone infringing on your right to your opinion, or if you're infringing on someone else's right to their opinion. I suspect it's the first. But either way, can't we all just get along?

Also, you say you're tired of people suggesting you listen to "real punk". Are you lumping emo and punk together? Because that might be part of the problem. I CANNOT STAND IT when someone does that. They're different genres. Or- emo is an offshoot of goth, which is a branch of post punk. Either way, they're VERY different. If you asked me for "emo/punk" bands and gave me some examples of what I considered pure emo, I WOULD suggest you listened to some "real punk". But considering you state in this question that you dislike most punk, I'm guessing you see the distinction, and that makes me happy. ;)

And- just curious here- what bands do you consider to be emo, and what genre do you consider bands like Panic! at the Disco and Fall Out Boy, which are frequently lumped under the label emo?

i presumed rock became lifeless interior the Eighteen Eighties, I hated Hair Bands and Punk and Disco. The 90s proved me incorrect as quickly as I heard Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Sound backyard. it style of sounds like rock could be dying back now that those bands are long gone in spite of the undeniable fact that it merely relies upon on what you like. It you do no longer in basic terms like the hot stuff on the time then it is going to look like rock is dying. of direction music has to alter or we would all be unwell of the comparable previous subject. it relatively is extra tricky at the instant to be a supergroup because of the fact no person can tournament checklist sales of the previous. human beings at the instant merely acquire the music they desire. Alot of the time it relatively is barely one music and not the full album. interior the 70s i might purchase an album no longer for one music yet for all of them. additionally for the conceal artwork of the album and what it had to assert. youthful human beings on the instant don't have the sensation of possessing an surely actual series. they simply placed music right into a working laptop or laptop and thats it. Rock will on no account die because of the fact there'll continually be that youthful musician obtainable it is sweet sufficient back up with some thing new yet use the impacts of the previous to do some thing like Kurt Cobain did.

According to Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, emo isn't punk rock at all...

If you want some real quality punk rock check out the Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks, and all of them innovators of the genre...
