They are Latin.
Ante meridian = before midday (noon)
Post meridian = after midday (noon)


Oops, I think Allure is right. It's not meridian, it's meridiem

ante (before) meridian = morning (midnight-->noon)
post (after) meridian = afternoon/evening (noon --> midnight)

"AM” Ante Meridiem .... which means “before noon”

“PM” stands for Post Meridiem “after noon.”
