I have 12 fish, 3 being Neon tetras 2 full grown Platys and the rest being Platy offspring in a functioning 20 gallon tank. My female platy has recently gotten an opaque white eye. This is noticeable. From the side it looks puffed out and very odd compared to her other green normal-looking eye. I was wondering what the cause of this could be, the cure, and if I should quarentine her and/or administer medication. Any help?

if u have that much fish in that tank it's better to clean it about 15-20% of the week. that fish may have had a bit of poo stuck in her eye. it may also be that the fish is a female and you've got heaps of males in there so they're hitting into her and hearting her eye . she may got a bit of gravel in her eye maybe.

Ask a veterinary about treatment, the Platy may have an injury to the eye,or a disease called "popeye" or a fungus(the white hairy stuff) or a combination of any or all of these. Prevention is much better than treatment, and frequent small water changes are the best prevention. Also if it's an injury some floating plants might provide some safety when she's being pursued by the male. Hope this helps. Good luck,PeeTee P.S.,If you have a quarantine tank it would be good to use it for treatment.

I had this same problem with my tank. Here's what elmer's aquarium guide said. Poor water quality, low ph, or medication overdose, over crowding, bacterial infections, internal infection, nutritional defencies, and old age. Do a 25% water change and check ph. Add Maracyn II remove charcoal from filter for 48 hours to allow the medication to work. Allow for 4 days for the eye to clear if it does not repeat steps. I did it and it took my fish a two weeks heal and he is swimming around happy.

It's probably an infection oftne called ICK.... you can buy over the counter medication to put in the tank water from most pet supply stores. Ive never had any luck though... when one gets it my experience is that eventually it contaminated the entire tank.

Water temp, pH, and water condition are all precursors to developing ICK.... you can try to clean the tank.... just follow the directions on the medication bottle.

Sounds like an infection. Get some aquarium salt and stress coat and use that in your aquarium. Im not an expert, but i had a molly with the same condition, she lost her eye, but she lived. : )

I used aquarium salt and stress coat. That got rid of the infection pretty fast when I used it.

sounds like a bacterial infection of some kind to me..but ask at a pet store..they will tell you..and you won't have to pay a vet.

she may have knocked her eye on something in her tank like a castle or big rock.
if not, ask your local pet store for advice.

Due to injury it might be followed by fungal infection; then it is to be treated with salt bath.
