Just wanted to know if anyone had any helpful info. WE noticed the front of her neck is swollen, looks like a frogs neck. She says it doesn't hurt or anything, the dr's said it's her thyroid, they took blood tests to make sure it is that but tests wont be back for 2 days so in the meantime we'd like some input. She wants to know what are worse case scenarios, does it involve surgery? Thank you for your input.

Thyroid surgery is less common that it used to be and is a last resort.
If it is a thyroid problem it will be treated with thyroxine (a synthetic thyroid drug) which is taken as a tablet daily.
It is most likely that if it is a thyroid problem it will be treated quickly and effectivly and it will be no more inconvenient than regular blood tests and medication.

Sounds like it could be a goiter. Some can be controlled with medication, some must be removed surgically and then she will need to take meds for the rest of her life.

I had my thyroid removed (mine was cancer, not goiter) and frankly it wasn't that bad a surgery, though it looked gruesome for the first week or so. I am on total thyroid replacement and I feel pretty darn good. Try not to panic too much--thyroid problems are quite common. Find a GOOD specialist/endocrinologist who will actually listen to her symptoms, not just dose her by bloodwork--that way she'll feel her best. Good luck!

they should be able to treat it with medicine if they can't it may involve surgery,
i don't know how old your niece is, so you might not want to tell her this info, if it does involve surgery they would slice open her neck to remove it...it's a pretty big cut...she may be restricted from eating or drinking certain things,,,like some people can't drink alcohol because their body can't break it down.
hope this can help, i hope your niece is ok and feels better and it's nothing serious!
