I imagine the faucet is a controlled thing. We know it should be dripping, and we know it is wasteful and costs us money. And that the sound reminds us that there is a problem and it needs to be fixed.
Raindrops are unexpected- we don't always know when they will happen, they fall as a surprise and we know it won't last and we have no control over it. It's comforting.
Doubt this makes any sense.

First off, I've got to say that that's a great question -- I never really thought about that. I'm thinking that a lot of answers will be more philisophical than factual.
I think it's because the dripping of a faucet is a result of something man made, whereas raindrops are natural. Also, water dripping from a faucet comes one at a time, while raindrops are more at once, which can make it sound better. The reason why it sounds better might be because of how we live -- when I say that, I mean that people are happier when they're with others, but when alone, they don't like it. That's a philisophical question, I hope it's what you're looking for and happy new year!!! ^_^

The sound of raindrops are an organic background or "white" noise. Many people like white noise to calm them, go to sleep, etc. Raindrops are usually closer audially to a constant, nonbroken noise. A dripping faucet on the other hand disrupts the background noise (there's almost always some, even produced in our own ears) with a distinctive extra noise with a finite, or individual quality. It's much closer to an actual "alarm" type noise, which is why it bugs us so much more. Put the dirty laundry in a sink with a leaky faucet to make the noise go away, although obviously that wont fix the leaky faucet.

the pitter patter of rain is random and the drip of a faucet is not. The faucet is also not supposed to drip and the sound reminds you of that fact, the rain is supposed to happen and makes you happy to experience it.

my thought on this, the water from the faucet cost us money, while the raindrops is free. we worry about bills, reservation and drought where in fact, raindrops reminds us the comfort of our bed without worry and feeling of solitude, sleepiness and just want to bundle up in the warm blanket and your loved one.
then again, since i came from another place, the drip from our faucet is not good for the water conservation, water is precious back home, its rare to get a full force of water so every drop counts. then the raindrops remind us how much memories we have shared with friends. cause when we are young, we used to play outside in the rain, those are the memories we always kept reminiscing every time my friend talk to each other. so to me, raindrops is part of my fondest memories with special people dear to me.

I believe what makes the faucet so annoying is the "steady" beat of water dropping directly and firmly against a metal or marble surface from a short distance. The drip or a faucet is more of a "thud... thud... thud... thud..." continuously and nonrandom. Kind of like a kid kicking the back of your seat in the same spot. Where as rain falls randomly against concrete, grass, trees, roofs, drains, windows, cars, etc. It's as if the rain is playing a gentle song. Also, the rain falls from a longer distance and can be firm or soft.

Multiples. A dripping faucet provies a single point of sound that many find hard to ignore. Because you cannot completely ignore or remove the noise, it becomes frustrating. Rain provides sounds in multiples which can be percieved a white noise. Rain therefore can be easily ignored, or utilized to make other sounds into white noise. This all makes rain more relaxing.

Whats with all this "Us" talk?
I hate the sound of dripping anything... to the point where I actually tried to rip a drippy gutter off the side of an apartment building I lived at in California years ago at 3:00 am because between that... and the rain it was driving me nuts!
Don't mess with my sleep!
