Someone bought my daughter a Russian doll for Christmas, in which it now turns out there is about a drawing-pin-head-full of white powder, which doesn't look like wood powder, in one of the doll's bottoms. Wierd. Any thoughts? I am slightly freaked out.

Wood turning on wood makes an awful squeak, by simply adding talcum powder, it is suddenly silent.
I used to restore books, and in an Arab library in the middle of Jerusalem, we were opening books which were infested with carpet beetles, which we had tried everything to kill them. We had put cyanide in cardboard dividers between the priceless manuscripts, gassed the buggers, froze the manuscripts, used insect killers in the breeding season, but still they managed to reproduce. They even ate the enamel on the dexian shelving.
Some of the oldest Persian Manuscripts had a white powder in them, which the insects did not like; they simple bored through the book, and moved onto the next one. This stuff was marvellous, but what was it? Welcome Glaxo, who were funding the project along with the Dutch embassy paid for a sample to be analysed at the University of London's forensic laboratories, and it was identified as Talc... apparently the little larva did not like the dry surface when they bored through it.
I have so Russian dolls from Uzbekistan, and stop the squeaking with talc; it’s the traditional way to do it, so do not worry. Coke comes from South America, and is too expensive in Russia to ship out to the states in Dolls.

Is is the doll within a doll type of arrangement? The top and bottoms can be difficult to turn sometimes and get squeaky. Talc is used as a lubricant, sounds like it was over-used on your daughters' one.

It could effectively be cocaine. I would call a policeman or take it to an authority, doll and all, if I were you... Also, how old is your daughter, because she might be into drugs (no offense)

first of who was it from?it might be someone on drugs
or it could be your daughter is into drugs depending how old she is.
if i were you i would take the doll away from you daughter and report it to the police immediatly.
