In another life I'm a "session musician" (and for those who don't believe me or my age, "Archer Street" will give you a clue...) and I've got no complaints about them ! Yes, they (or their A&R men!) made a blunder over the Beatles, but I don't see them sitting crying in the gutter!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's not that the Company doesn't know your 'worth', its what your position is worth in your geographical location. I work for a major Corporation and have 'carried' colleagues for the past 3 years yet they get paid the same rate as I do. Yes, the management team within my Dept appreciate my value to the Company, but have their hands tied by Company protocol - they simply cannot single people out for increased salary unless their pay structure dictates. Sadly mine doesn't. Instead, the Company makes use of my skills to their advantage - typical of major conglomerates!
As for Decca and the Beatles ... bad decision and a totally different ball game all together.

I think I read that the guy who rejected The Beatles committed suicide over it. I think all firms undervalue their people. The way efficiency drives are effecting average people is that the supervisory jobs in the middle of companies are being replaced. That leaves plenty of customer facing people at the bottom being managed more directly by the people at the top. There isn't enough work out there for reasonably intelligent people to do. It's frustrating because in the corporate world the profit maximising fantasy is to have the executives managing all the little people with the aid of management information systems. Middle brow types are unneccessary overheads.
