Convict Cichlids are notorious breeders. Some people say you can simply add fish and water, and end up with babies.

Convict Cichlids breed a lot and very often. And because they care for their young, many survive.

You don't really have to do anything to make the fish breed...just supply them with proper places. For Convict Cichlids, a terra cotta pot placed on its side in the tank works well for a nursery. Just be careful---they are HIGHLY aggressive and will even attack your hand once they've formed a mated pair and begin to lay eggs/hatch babies.

For things like Platies and Guppies, breeder grass should be added to ensure the survival of the babies---otherwise, just making sure you have 2 females for every male is all you really need to do to start down the path to successful fish breeding.

Guppies and mollies are live bearers and can have babies (Fry) every 30 to 35 days. They can have up to 100 fry at a time although 30 to 40 is more normal. As for the breeding part they pretty much handle that on their own. Just remember to keep two females to every male. 6 females and 3 males is a good number in a ten gallon tank. You also need lots of plants in the tank (real or plastic) for the fry to hide in. If you can find some that are ground-cover types be sure to use them. Even their own mother will eat them after they are born. You can also use a breeder box. Although some females get stressed out while in the breeder box. Others do just fine.

Guppies are the easiest and you have to do virtually nothing.

The key to breeding is this:

Great water quality based on what the fish needs.
Great foods and a variety of them.
Male and Female fish.
Replicate the "natural" environment at breeding time.

Livebearers are easiest to breed.

Mollies
Platys
Swordtails
Guppies

All you need is a breeding box and a pregnant fish.

Guppies are the easiest. But you will need a birthing hopper for them, they are live birth and if you don't have a hopper when the baby comes out the mother will eat them as they come out.
