Color suggestions: Mocha, pure white, navy
Cheap curtains: buy some of those $3 sheets at Walmart. They come in several different colors. If you don't sew, you can use curtain ring clips on them. If you don't want to put up a rod, you can simply hang them from clear map tacks placed about 6" apart above your window. At even a short distance, the map tacks are not very visible. To get the length right, just fold over one end and attach the clips and it will look like a built in valance. Wish I could send you a photo, I just did it for my dining room and it looks great. The curtain ring clips are about $6 per package of 7 at Walmart.
Good luck!

Sheers are cheaper than curtains, offer some privacy. You can buy ready made shades, just make sure they are the window size or larger. If you live up north, here is an idea that I have used. I bought a quilt holder (they look like extra large paper towel holders) I bought pretty quilts that were very inexpensive and attached them. Usually side windows will only need a twin sized quilt , a queen or king quilt will easily cover a picture window. Here is the beauty part" If you live up north they give insulation, ALSO you can buy the matching shams and put them on your chairs and sofa. Lots of colors go with yellow including greens, blues, oranges, reds and purples. Look for a quilt with some yellow in it. Quilts often have lovely colors and patterns it them. If you living room window is really large Hang two smaller twin quilt holders and use two quilts instead of one. You will have to sew a casing on the top edge of the quilt, but if you have NO sewing skills, simply go to a store and buy the round curtain rings that have the clips on them. If you are using one quilt you can push it to the side when you want light, or put a large curtain hook or tie back on the side.

mini blind for privacy, soft roched curtain panel up top. You just buy 3 times as much regular cotton fabric as the window is wide, sew it into a huge rectangle with the rod pocket on top, then put rings at the bottom, middle and top. Hang it, and run string from top to bottom to the length you want the curtain to hang, tie and cut off the string, stack the fabric on top of itself. Very pretty for not a lot of money.

go to a thrift shop.. either that or craigslist.com. My house looks like a pottery barn magazine and its completely second hand. As for your curtains, I would go with a white sheer curtain and drapes that just hang there on the sides of the window. they dont necessarily have to close, basically there for looks. good luck and happy new year!

maybe no ideam for your exact item.. but in the babies room.. i bought a mini blind 4$, bought fabric at walmart 6$ can of spray glue 6$ now the hard part.. took the blind apart (easy) an glued each slat to the fabric i cut in strips.. basicly wrapped the slat with the fabric... cut holes for the string (hole punch) and put it back together.. took me 5hrs for a 42"x54" blind.. but it sure looks nice.. one other way i was going to do it..was to make it like a roman blind.. glue the fabric to the ropes of the mini blind without taking it apart.. not sure how that will turn out yet

I would find something ( a dishtowel or rug) that has the yellow in it, then use the other colors in the item as accents in the room. This trick never fails.

IKEA has a nice selection and they aren't hemmed -so they are longer than most bought curtains, if that is important. A cream color would look nice.
