I remember when the Carolina Panthers came into existence it was left up to the citizens to name them. Suggestions were taken and a panel decide out of the pool of suggestions.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And on the fifth day, he said "Let there be football" and created the NFL. However he did not name the teams. Some early teams were named by the owners. Today the names are given by the corporate sponsors and sometimes they hold contests to name the teams. Sometimes they name teams based on the type of people who live or have moved there (eg. Vikings). A few were named the same as the baseball teams that were in there cities (Giants, Cardinals).

Teams get their names many different ways. The Baltimore Ravens got their name because Edgar Allen Poe lived in Baltimore, and wrote a famous poem called "The Raven".

The Pittsburgh Steelers are so named because the steel industry was very important to Pittsburgh in the 1940s.

Check out Wikipedia for more information about individual teams.

I know how the New York Jets got their name...
They used to play at Shea Stadium. So, all the planes used to fly over Shea, so they called them the Jets (They also sound like Mets... :) )
