I teach History and can explain this fact. The reason is that photography was quite different. In order to pose for a picture, (portrait) one had to sit entirely still for 2 hours. Since this was/is difficult, the individual had to wear a brace that held up their posture and head.
This is why most people appear rigid and/or stoic in pre 1900's pictures.

Thats kind of insulting and ignorant in a way to say that. What level of history are you taking? seriously. I am appalled by the level of idiocy today. It may look odd to you because you are different in time. Its nothing odd, just time. 100 years later in the future, and there may be someone asking a question like this, saying how odd you look in comparison to them. This is a fairly simple subject to comprehend. Go into another country, or study some history to enlighten yourself.
Your local library will have tons of information. Also google helps. Hope that answers you.
Human newborn babies have looked the same for an extremely long time. Nothing has changed in the past 100 years in the major genetic composition in infant anthropoids.
Maybe every baby you've seen is beautiful is because you haven't seen any ugly babies yet! xD

They look odd, because that is not the time you are from. You may look odd to someone a hundred years from now. And malnutrition and unsafe medicines also caused problems then. That's why some babies look strange, because their mothers were probably malnourished during pregnancy and took unsafe medication. Also nobody smiled in photographs and not because they were sad, but that was just the way it was.

People lived hard lives back then; hard work, hard sicknesses, poor nutrition; all those things are a hard hit on the human body. We may be a prettier people now because we are much more well taken care of as a whole.

I've always wondered the same thing myself, I have thought maybe its evolution or a stereotype issue relating to style and looks, also the pictures you see back then are of poorer quality and are not color, your mind interprets things a little differently.
If you want to sound real ignorant you can say the better people get laid more which = more babies - it might be true

People in photos taken prior to humanity's first contact with an extraterrestial species look different than people do in photos taken today, due to alien manipulation of human DNA.
