Paul O'Neill? Why, for gosh sake? All of the others here, like O'Neill, are very good players but I don't see a retired number there. Some folks mentioned Jeter, a likely candidate a few years from now. Sentimentality is not the only reason to retire a number. That requires a little greatness, too. The problem with your list is two-fold: a lot of these guys played with other teams for a long time (some longer than they did for the Yankees) and none of them compare well with the numbers that HAVE been retired. Bernie Williams comes closest. Joe Torree probably will have his number retired, but after the 2004 Divisional Playoffs, in which Terry Francona out-managed him almost to death, it should be obvious that Joe (a GREAT player) is grossly over-rated as manager.

O'Neill will be the first in a series of numbers to be retired. Soon, in the next 15 years, the numbers 21 (O'Neill), 51 (Bernie), 20 (Posada), 42(Rivera), 2 (Jeter), and 6 (Torre). After that, the following numbers will have been retired by the yankees... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 twice (Berra and Dickey), 9,15,16,21,23,32,37,42 twice (Rivera and Jackie Robinson), 44, and 49. O'Neill was the captain of the last yankee dynasty, and was the heart and soul of the yankees. He will get his number on display.

no .although he was a great member of Yankees and i for one did admire his play on the field, i do not think that he rates this honor .the next in line is obvious jeter.jeter has a better overall game and that is because he is totally unselfish.he gladly make an out if it meant getting the runner in scoring position.granted Paul O'Neill feels the same but he definitely rather get the hit first the team needs second .which he has displayed with his tantrums when he failed to get a hit

Paul O'Neill lol, I don't think so Come on I don't even like the Yanks and I think they have better to chose from then him. Can't even stand watching him announce. How about they retire A-Rod and hang up his number he's useless. They sure can't afford to lose Jeter, now that's a player I can respect..

No.Bernie Williams will be the next player to have his number retired by the Yankees because he has been a sensational player for them for so long.

He should, its not always about the stats. Remember the chants of Paul O'Neill during his last game at the stadium. I still get chills thinking of that.

He's another of the "Heart" picks or fan favorites but although he contributed to the 4 World Series wins his efforts really didn't stand out enough for HOF consideration or number retirement. Is he a fan favorite, indeed, but did he stand out like a Cal Ripken, not really.

The Yankees haven't been using # 21 for years so it is possible that they will retire it if he gets into Hall of Fame.

If they retire thye number of a player like him, they'll wind up retiring the uniform numbers of Posada, Rivera, Williams, A/Rod, Sheffield, Giambi, Matsui and almost everybody. They'll have to use roman numbers some years from now.

If his bid for the Hall of Fame is successful, then possibly his number will be retired, but no guarantee. Only 17 people have had that honor.
