The Puritans settled New England because they wanted religious freedom. A whole host of other European nations took the rest of the Northern and Southern American continents piecemeal because they wanted to build them into assets.

Economies in the old days were agrarian, which meant that crops were grown and traded/sold. This made money for those who owned the plantations, and those who owned the ships, and those who owned the docks. In general, owning things is great.

In general, if you look at any map about what's produced in an area, it wasn't too much different a few hundred years ago (crop-wise, at least).

As far as what the economies were, they were as they always are: The lower-class folks live in tiny little houses, eat cheap food and get paid very little to do the physical stuff. The middle class lives a little better, eats a little better, and does more intellectual tasks (like watching the workers). The upper class, who either manages everyone or owns assets, lives quite well, eats quite well, and usually doesn't _have_ to do much of anything.

Hope that helped.

Look up each colony by name in the Wikipedia Online Enclyclopedia. Check under "history" in the article for the information you are looking for.

Example: Wikipedia: Maryland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland

One learns better when they have to do the footwork.

Good luck!

1. They were running away from religious persecution.
2. New free land was now available(just have to kill the real people that live their)
3. lastly the economy had to be bad because they couldn't pay their tea taxes.
