Yesterday my doctor determined that I have mastitis from a clogged milk duct. She prescribed me antibiotics and although I am feeling better, my left breast is still engourged and very red. She mentioned to me yesterday the possibility of an abscess which would require surgery to drain the milk.
Has anyone had one of these? If so can you tell me about it?

Yes, with my first baby, in 1975. You need to try to get that milk moving. Have you tried heat compresses or the shower? I did all the wrong things being a new mom and new to breastfeeding and instead of giving me an antibiotic, I was admitted and had it lanced. What I did wrong was nurse only on the good one because of the awful pain, which led to the blocked duct, then onto to the abcess. If you can nurse the baby with that one, please do so. Also, if you have a nursing mom's group like Le Leche League, maybe they would have some suggestions, at least some support. Do try to keep the milk flowing. When I had mine lanced, it was packed with a long piece of guaze and I ended up quitting nursing because I didn't know what to do. My next 3 babies, I was more educated, relaxed and successful and thoroughly enjoyed nursing. Good luck to you.

She's talking worse case scenario. Don't dwell on that.. but rather do your best to make sure that isn't required. Make sure you finish your prescription (do NOT stop when you feel better.. but complete the prescription). The best thing you can do is to keep that breast as empty as you can. Nurse on your good side first until your baby slows down a bit.. then switch to your sore side. You might even change your normal positioning - perhaps off your lap... this way your baby's nursing with apply pressure in s different way on the ducts. A clean, warm, moist washcloth applied to the nipple might help soften the obstruction as well.

Nurse a bit more frequently until you're feeling better. I've attached a link to La Leche League's information regarding this topic! This is a GREAT source for all breastfeeding mothers!

I had mastitis in my left breast and was prescribed antibiotics as well. The antibiotics lasted for several days and even after finishing them I still had engourgement and lots of discomfort. It took a few weeks to completely get back to normal, but I do agree with another posted answer that continuing to nurse on that side is a HUGE help even though it may hurt. Heat definitely helps, as well as light massaging. Good luck!
