Bettas ARE tropical, freshwater fish. They need their water to be in the mid 70's to thrive. I have mine in nothing smaller than 2.5 gallon tanks and they are very healthy and happy. My oldest one is over 2 years old! You can get away without a heater if you have a warm room that they can stay in, no drafts!
-Make sure to buy water conditioner for them because chlorine/chloramine in tap water will kill them!
-NEVER keep more than one male together. They are fighting fish and will kill one another. You can keep a betta in a community tank with other non nippy, peaceful fish. Also, if you do not get a filter, depending on the size of their home and how much you feed, you must change their water 50-100% every 3 days to weekly with conditioned and similar temperature water. Hope this helps!

Betta are TROPICAL fish. They require temperatures in the 70-80 degree range. They are, in fact, part of the Gourami family of fish species.
If kept in ideal tropical conditions (keeping in mind that Asia is generally hot and those puddles they live in absorb the heat and keep the temperatures from flucuating), Betta can live MANY years. I've heard of some living to 5 years or more.
A nice small tank with a low-current filtration system, heater, and light is a very nice set up for a single Betta. Males cannot be housed together with other males or females. Females, however, can be housed together with other females.
Good luck!

Females are not as highly colored, and have much shorter fins. A well conditioned breeding female will often display horizontal stripes.
Habitat/Care: Bettas are one of the most recognized, most colorful, and often most controversial fish in the freshwater hobby. Debates range on about the appropriateness of keeping them in small bowls. To fully understand their needs it is important to become familiar with their native habitat. Bettas originate in the shallow waters in Thailand (formerly called Siam, hence their name), Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and parts of China. They proliferate rice paddies, shallow ponds, and even slow moving streams.

They are tropical fish. They can survive in cooler waters like in the mid 60's degree F but they wont move. I'm not sure how much interest a fish that stays in one location not moving is to you. Get a heater, raise the water temperature to 78 degrees and you'll have a happy betta.

You don't need a heater in their tank they are a cold water fish. Tropical fish always need a heater and air filters. They are way easier to keep. Mine lasted 3 years!
