The solder has not flowed onto and around the joint, but is just sitting on top of it like a bead. To get a good joint, you have to transfer some heat from the iron into the leads being soldered, not just to the solder. The idea is to get the solder to flow into and soak the joint before solidifying.

A bad solder joint will appear as flat or dull in color, were as a good joint will be bright and shiny. A dull looking joint is called a cold joint and will not hold as strongly.

The solder should be shiny and there should be evidence of flowing solder.
