I think it's a great idea. I've never understood why you're allowed to smoke yourself to death at 16, when you have to wait until 18 to drink. That's madness as far as i can see. 18's definitely the right age for smoking. At 16 alot of people are still more likely to give in to peer pressure, or just smoke because 'it's cool', whereas by 18 you should be more mature and less likely to give in to things like that. Though it is true that to alot of people, laws make no difference, and if they're going to smoke they'll do it anyway.

Compared to a lot of people here you have reasonably good grammar.
I think that it should have been done 20 years ago. I have several friends who took up smoking between 16 and 18 and now wish they never had started, I am sure a few of them may not have started if the age had been 18 back then.
I myself used to smoke when I was 16 but had enough sense to give up after around a year (it's amazing how more mature you get every year at around that age).

Wrong only the age for buying tobacco. So now adults will have to go to the shop them selves and not send the children. Excellent idea, maybe cigarettes should be only available with a prescription as an addictive drug.

[sarcasm] Gee won't that be a lot of fun for some smokers?[/sarcasm]
I'm not too bothered myself as I'm old enough to smoke if I wanted to even with the new law, but I can't help but wonder how they plan on enforcing it. I bet it'll be just another brilliant Labour Law that every man(or woman) and his dog ignores.

What is it now in the U.K.?
Its been 18 forever in America.
Why on earth would anyone want to smoke anyways. Its nasty and its BAD for you.
Nothing uglier in the world than a beautiful young girl choking on a cancer stick.

Being a non-smoker, hating the habit so much i personally welcome the new Law, although i do think it;s going to hit many of the smaller retailers as being 17 at the moment with many friends who are smokers it's going to cause majour trouble at the counter.. i reckong it's going to go back to the day's of when i were at school and people will go up to smokers and ask to buy single cigs off them haha.. although i do think my friends, who even though wish to kick the habbit are not going to be very happy as i don't thnk they want to give up just yet.. But i welcome the move.. i think once the law is established i think it's going to deter the younger ones away from cigs!! yuck!!

Hell, they're smoking at 8 years of age in the Appalaichans, when did any law stop anyone from doing anything they didn't want to do??? Take a look at our Nations (USA) prison populations!

I agree, I smoke myself but even if you only start at 18 you have the rest of your life to smoke your lungs to smithereens. If you gonna start smoking then the later the better. Cheers

It will make no difference what so ever. How many people started before the legal age anyway? I know I did.

i think, the people who are going to smoke will do it regardless, they already start at 13 or whatever...
there are so many more important problems they could focus on than legal ages for things. people really dont give a d@mn.
and its their choice...
a WRONG choice,
but whatever... *smiles*
