Snakes are fascinating creatures. They are beautiful and amazing. Having both a ball python and a Colombian boa I can personally say that I enjoy them both more than I do our dog. They are easy to care for and are wonderful to watch and hold. There is something so amazing about watching them move. To me it is NOT about the 'shock and awe' factor. In fact very, very few people know that we even own them and even fewer people have actually seen them. They can be wonderful ways to educate younger people not only about captive snakes but also wild ones.
Indeed they are different from 'normal' pets in that they don't really show emotion and you can't play fetch or have them chase a feather around the floor. To me that is part of the enjoyment of them. They are actually easier to care for than our dog or the rats we keep. They are even easier to care for than a cat (as we had one of those too). They don't need walked, pet, fed daily, large yards to run in, several piles a day to clean up, chew on things, tear up things, or (contrary to popular belief if cared for RIGHT) smell.
Also if you think about it, isn't just eating and sleeping in the cage you have them in really all most caged pets do? Snakes can be taken out and handled and, on nice days, even be taken outside and let to roam in the grass or small trees. When was the last time you saw someone let their hamster, rat, or any other small rodent or bird loose in their yard?
My question to you is why own any other animal?

I would agree with the shock value, though I take mine out and play with it. He loves to roam around and smell things. I have also used him for hands-on speaking with public groups about conservation of snakes in an ecosystem. I don't think he doesn't like me- I haven't gotten bit by him yet, but I know he really just doesn't care.
It is more for the appreciation of the species as well.
Why do people have fish? They are probably more pointless-can't leave the aquarium (well...they could, but we won't go there).
Most people don't own a snake big enough to eat you. The only snake that I know eats people is an anaconda which can eat small children (I had a friend who grew up in a small Brazilian village- kids went missing sometimes)

Yes... well I have a cat, and 4 snakes. My cat doesn't like the snakes and one of the snakes (ball python) hates the cat. They just generally avoid each other. But yeah, they can live fine together. Maybe if you have an especially mean spirited or mischievous cat or a snake that escapes a lot out to where the cats roam around you might have a bit of a problem. But other wise they should be fine. Just keep the tank very secure, and you should be good.

I dont know what you think about how they just lay in their cage , eat, and sleep. My lovley corn snake is always active. And I sure as hell knows he likes me. Its no different from your dog or cat or whatever you have. If you cant see the love between a snake owner and their snake, well then you never will. And I'm sorry for you. And I have played with snakes big enough to eat me. And trust me they were all perfect sweeties. As I said You will never know what its like to truly share a bond that goes deeper than others peoples bull sh!t. If you have any pets, why? Why do you have a pet? All they do is eat sleep and lay around. Oh and yes lets not forget about the unconditional love. Jusrt cause its not all furry and it doesnt wag its tail when you come doesnt mean that its not capable of love. Anything is capable of love if you try enough. Some people just dont have the patience to open their eyes. You say a snake cant like you. Then how is it you can have a 10 ft gator that likes you? Hhmmm? Please answer me that. Cause seen gators that have shown more love for their owners than any dog or cat has. I supose it really is all just a matter of opinoin. But then in my opinoin you should stay the hell away from this forum if you dont like the fact of snakes and reptiles loveing and careing for anything besides themselves. I'm sorry for you. And I apologize for being blunt and rude. But oh well you will live.
Good day

hi there
there is only 3 snakes that can eat a humans (more like a child or small person)... rock python, Burmese python and a anaconda.. most snakes are very docile and the only reason someone would get bitten or hurt or killed by one would be stupidity.. large snake u need at least 2 people.. in the room b4 u should handle a big snake.. common sense ... snakes are cool .. they eat once week they poop once a week their very low maintenance ..i hate cats and pitbulls but ppl still buy theses ... cat poop everyday they scratch u they need yearly needles they eat every day... pitbulls the poop like a horse they eat alot and their more dangerous then a snake more pitbulls kill their owners or children then a snake would....so why do ppl buy pitbulls i guess the same reason .... so if u dont like snakes then dont like them ... but their is ppl out there that does and think they are cool..

I had a couple of Ball Pythons growing up. They allowed me to take them out of their aquarium and hold them. I never wondered if they liked me or not. I enjoyed watching them as well. I also learned a lot by owning a snake.
Really having a snake as a pet is as a totally preferential thing, just like why do people have dogs or cats or turtles.

I've never owned a snake and if it wasn't for having to feed it mice I would have one. While they aren't the type of pet you can cuddle and take to bed they can still be very sweet. My Plant and Animal Behavior teacher has one named Chloe who is always very friendly when he takes her out. There's actually another snake in another one of my classes that is terrified of mice, never thought I'd see the day.

Why do people have bugs or other critters kept as pets, they want to.
I like snakes and other critters, but my Mr. has the same mind set as you do. He feels snakes and other critters I have had growing up are pointless too.

I have had several Ball Pythons. I have never been bitten, in fact my daughter has been holding them since she was 5. Now at 8 she walks around with a 3 ft one around her neck and rarely puts it down. I asked her if she wanted a puppy and she said no, Kaa(the 3 ft Ball Python) wouldn't like him.

Keeping a snake is more for the shock value. Plus it costs virtually nothing to take care of them. My snakes don't seem to mind me
