Spyware, particularly data miners, are a real nuisance. If the computer's slow, and you seem to be sending a lot of stuff on your monotor icon, it's probably commercial spyware from sites you've visited. Lavasoft, a Swedish company, have some good, simple free stuff.

Viruses tend to be more destructive. and AVG, as mentioned, is free. I've got it, and it caught a Trojan a couple of months ago, so it does work.

By the way, you do need to scan. It's time consuming, yeah, but the alternative is a computer crash.

you can run a free online scan at housecall.trendmicro.com
you should download the free trial of pc-cillin internet security 2007 quite possibly the best security suite available on the market today.
i've never had any problems with it.
you can get advice on manually deleting a virus in most cases for free on most of the well known companies websites. But you would need to know the virus was there and the name of it.
but the object of Antivirus software is to prevent your system becoming infected in the first place.
while there are freeware antivirus suites and scanners available not all of them can clean your entire computer by that i mean they are unable to read the system volume information folder which contains your system restore points as well as other VITAL system information. to scan this folder the only scanner i have found at a reasonable price is pc-cillin internet security 14 and now 2007. antivirus is such a small part of online security in fact that is the smallest and least thing to worryu about. hackers are the worst as is unauthorised users gaining access to your local network LAN. as the trend micro has a wireless network scanner and detection program built in it provides a great wireless network security suite. it can also be used as a parental tool to block access to sites that you do not want young children or curious teens gaining access too.
the list goes on on the benefits of this suite.

AVG is not so good one person earlier i read had this and was having problems removing malware ok he did in his list of tried ware list trend but in my experiance trend is the best most secure suite on the market today and i have not had a problem yet and my computer is on 24/7 and i've been using trend for six months or so.

i seem to recall years ago avg being the cause of more problems than it solved. but that may no longer be true for the most recent versions.

First off, you cannot delete viruses without scanning your computer. It has to scan to detect it. Go to www.trendmicro.com free scan need to scan for both viruses, when finished go back then click on free spy-ware scan. Go to www.download.com : free ad-adware & spywaredoctor. If you have a firewall that could be preventing the install you have to change settings to allow, also if it says need active X, you need to click the yellow bar (right click to allow). Also to run in the back ground try spywareblaster & free firewall zonealarm all found at www.download.com type program name in search. You need to ensure when trying the freebies you click on the free options only, read carefully. I also use www.free-av.com (free virus) it also has a window that pops up when updating it is just for information purposes (advertisement) you just click ok, and continue, a lot have that, just ignore it & click ok to continue with free versions. Scanning can take upto an hour or more. I have been using free-av since 1999 & find it easy & reliable.

I use all programs listed. If you can't get the freebies, 1st uninstall all by start program uninstall, then search for all aspects of the program to remove. Then restart puter - then try freebies again.

If you know the name or version of the virus, then this site will give you tools to remove the virus. (Symantec is the parent company of Norton Anti-virus):
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/security_response/removaltools.jsp

Here's a site where you can also download a great anti-spyware program called Ad-Aware:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
If you need a free online virus scan (assuming you can get online), then use this link:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm

Here's another free online virus scan site:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_frame.asp

Once you are sure that your computer is virus-free, you can get a FREE anti-virus program from Grisoft, called AVG Anti-virus. Here's their site:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

Be sure to download the updates to each one of these after you download the original programs. That way, the databases will be current.

Good luck!

If you have Spy Ware you need the free download of SpyBot and AdAware. If you have a trojan, worm or other real virus you really should buy something like Norton Anti Virus, but something like avast will help with most. I included links to all below.

Good Luck and Happy New Year!

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:

I would never delete a virus..Quarentine it. If you delete the file it may have already replicated itself to a system file making the whole PC worthless.
