Their goal was to find a water route to the Pacific -- but (obviously) they didn't find it. They did discover lots of plants and animals that were previously unknown

Reread your material. It probably won't say "They discovered xx-yy", but probably has little tidbits like: "We crossed a great river at the sea (Columbia)".
