Take it to the vet. Pet store small animals are often sold with parasites. Do not use the pet store remedies!!!! They are often very dangerous. The vet will be able to prescribe a safe medication. Be sure it's an exotics vet, not a dog/cat vet.

Part his fur and make sure that it is not fleas. If you do not see anything. You should clean the cage and his food and water bowl basicly everthing he touches, just like you would do for a child that has lice. What he may have is called mites the mites will irritate the hamster's skin and so the may hamster scratch excessively. The skin may also appear sore and there may be some fur loss. On close inspection the mites may be seen as small specks moving through the coat of the hamster. Some mites are more easily seen in the dark under torch light. Mild cases of mite infestations can be treated with an anti-mite spray designed for caged birds or small animals available from pet shops, such as petsmart (around 4 bucks). The head of the hamster should be shielded to avoid spraying into the eyes and the body sprayed. The cage should be cleaned, sprayed with the anti-mite spray and clean bedding should be provided. This treatment should be repeated as directed on the anti-mite spray. If mild cases fail to improve within a day or two or in cases of severe mite infestation, or if signs of Mange develop veterinary treatment should be sought. A vet can take a skin scraping to confirm the hamster has mites.

Hope i could help. Good luck :]

Didnt you take a closer look at the animal before you bought her? I personally would not buy a pet just to give it away when it needs someone to help more than anything. I don't feel like you are responsible enough to be a pet owner. I would take her to the vet asap. Its probably nothing serious, but I would never turn my back on a pet in need.

Could be fleas or some other skin parasite. Check at the pet store, I don't know for sure what you can safely use on a hamster.

It could be allergic to the bedding. Make sure you are not using pine. I recomment using Carefresh. It is cleaner and more absorbant than Aspen. Or it may be fleas but I doubt that it would have fleas if you buy it from pet stores such as Petsmart or Pet Supermarket.

Well your hamster probably has mites. Which they get from bedding or hay. A good way to look for them would be to search thru his under coat for small black specks moving about. Not a serious problem. You can find mite medicine for hamsters at your local pet store, and it is applied to the fur. Good luck!
