For anyone out there knowledgable on the subject of college admissions.

I was a terrible student in high school, for reasons other than mental capacity; I made many poor choices. However, I took some time to travel the world, came back and joined the U.S. Air Force, was "born again" academically, and completed a year of courses at the University of North Carolina. I wonder what my chances are of getting into my dream school, NYU. My high school GPA was poor, 2.8, but my college statistics are:

GPA: 4.0
SAT: 2220.
*Along with some good extra-curriculars (Teaching English abroad, coaching, etc)

My chances were 1/10,000 before... if I've narrowed them down to 1/1000 I'm happy.

Thoughts?

I don't think you're going to have too much trouble getting into NYU. Your college credentials are better than mine. Yikes =)

A 4.0 at UNC (Chapel Hill, I assume) is no small accomplishment. Combined with the small fact that you went and joined the Air Force and really turned your life around is going to override any lingering effects of your high school transcript.

I'd say you have a 97% chance of acceptance at NYU. I rarely say this, but you have some truly amazing accomplishments under your belt.

Best of luck.

I say TRY! I understand it is your dream school and you may be somewhat scared to see what the outcome would be. The truth is you'll never know unless you try!

Despite your past mistakes, you recognize that's what they are - PAST MISTAKES. And you have done quite well to make up for that. Though you will have to show them your high school GPA, they will see your college GPA (4.0 is great) and those SAT scores are super. I'm sure your admissions essay will be spectacular with all the experiemce you have to offer.

If you don't want to apply right away, make an appointment with an admissions officer and ALSO speak to someone in the department you are interested in. They can give you a yay or nay and may even offer advice on how to improve your chances. You'll be a transfer student and I SUSPECT that you may be an older student (late 20's? could be wrong).

Good luck.

Here is the deal, at this point they are not going to be interested in your High School Transcripts. In your application there IS an essay. in that essay you are going to get to explain to them how you came to chose them and what you feel you can bring to the school. (Which is a lot) NYU, like all colleges wants the best, but they dont define that by high school scores alone. Your recent past is of most interest to them, as is the idea that your ambition and drive will serve them as well. I think you have a great chance. BY the way, I teach college.

Colombia: do lots of extracurricular activities that go along with what you want to major in. Your GPA is high, but low as far as Colombia recognizes. Sat is good but not great. You have id say a 20-30% chance. NYU: your chances are decent. Keep doing you.

I would say you have about a 60% chance of getting in. 2220 on the SAT is really high, and a 4.0 GPA would put you at an advantage. Good luck!

UNC is a very good school. If you have a 4.0 there, then I'm pretty sure NYU would accept you.
