What kind of small snakes can be kept as good pets?

I was thinking about getting a snake soon, and need a little help deciding what species to get. I know that I do not want a large snake, like a python, boa, or even corn snake. So what kind of snake is available that does not get very big, and is fairly cheap to feed?

Just saying, you can't just decide to get a snake. You need to do research and make sure you know everything about the snake.

No snake is cheap. You have to have money for food every week, vet money is crucial, you need money for the cage, accesories, substrate, UVB bulbs (that can be sorta expensive) and heat pads, plus the snake.

After you make sure you have all the money, ESPCIALLY VET MONEY! & all the research and make sure you know EVERYTHING known to man about that snake, you can get it.

Some good snakes that are what you would like are:

Ball Pythons (3-4 feet, sometimes 5)
Cornsnakes- (many morphs and get about 5 feet, but are thin, unlike Ball Pythons)
Kingsnakes-(3-7 feet depending on the species)

These are just a few. Do some research on easy beginner snakes, and see what sounds good.

First of all, let me set the ignorant people straight. Corn snakes get 5-7 ', Ball Pythons about7-9'-big enough to constrict a child.
Hog-nosed snakes are endangered in some areas, especially the Eastern Hog-Nosed Snake. It is not a good idea to capture a snake from the wild because when you get tired of it, it will not acclimate back to the wild.
You need about $400.00 to properly set up a snake cage. We recommend the Kenyan Sand Boa to customers who want a small snake. In our area, the cost is $90+. This nice little snake gets 18-24" long and is even good with children, with supervision, and over age 5. They start out eating one pinky a week. A pinky is a newborn mouse.

if you are a beginner then the best snake to have is a corn snake. corn snakes can grow up to about 5 foot they also eat mice which puts most people off buying them, they are fairly cheap they cost around £30 and over. if you want more info on corn snakes you could go on google and have a look on there as their are lots of good websites.

I would start with a corn snake they can get bigger but they do not get that big and any snake isn't going to be really cheap to keep or feed no animal is..lol

Not really, Garter snakes range way into Canada. However, you want to heat the tank you keep it in, Not every snake eats mice. Some eat rabbits, cats, dogs, and children. (O.K., just kidding - - a little) Other snakes prefer fishes and frogs, some like insects and earthworms. All prefer live food but might, in time learn to eat frozen/thawed food.

not all pythons and boa's are big children's Python and ball python rainbow boa they don't get much bigger them 4-5 feet max... ball pythons and children's pythons and rainbow boa's are good starter snakes as well as a corn snakes and milk snakes and king snakes...but they all need to be handled once a day with the exception of when their fed or in a shed.. then u shouldn't handle them ... when their been fed should handle them for 2-3 days after and same as when they are in a shed...

Garder snakes are good but you should feed them small gold fish that you keep in a shallow dish of some short so the fish can live but i am not sure how you are on feeding live animals to other things. But that is one of your only options when it comes to small snakes

Hog-nosed snakes are the most fun beginners snake and are cheap to feed. They are clowns and have hoods like cobras but are completely harmless

corn snakes make goodones so do milk snakes and they only get about three feet long and usually there pretty dosile. i personally keep ball pythons they only get about 7 feet and are extremely well tempered
