Without knowing what year of college you're in, I would suggest an internship (which may be part of getting your degree anyways) for a local tv station. That can lead to job prospects within that company.
Otherwise, try to also put in some volunteer time at a public access station.

Since you're still in college, I would suggest that you spend as much time as possible photographing things around you. Take your camera with you when you are on campus, and shoot things that you find interesting.
Little by little, you will develop your skills -- the main one needed for becoming a visual journalist is the ability to "see a photograph" where others may not.
Once you have done that, you will have a portfolio that you can take to potential employers, such as a newspaper (you might want to start with a weekly), local magazine, etc. And be prepared to give away your work, just to get your foot in the door.
Good luck.

What exactly is a Visual Journalist? My husband was a Waiter before he was a Graphic Designer!
