Take a towel, wipe it up as best as you can, then is you have one of the little portable rug cleaners, spot clean it with steam.
If not resolve and some scrubbing.

I don't have babies anymore but when my cat pukes on the carpet we use Spot Shot. It works wonders! We have gotten all kinds of stains out with this cleaner. You can find it in the carpet cleaning section. i know Sam's Club sells it too and you get 3 cans of it and it's cheaper than if you buy it at the store.

I'm not sure what you could use to get up the stuff that already on there without leaving pale spots.unless you steam clean the whole thing. But what I can tell you is if you catch it rite away after he spits up, poor salt or baking powder on it. Let that absorb it. then just vacume that up when its dry. That way you are not just smearing it into the carpet.

Invest in a steam cleaner, the new Bissel is a god send! My son is 5 now and is constantly making messes (we're trying to teach him to be neater with his eating/playing but he's 5!) and with another baby on the way we decided to pick one up for ourselves at Christmas. OMG I don't know how I lived without this thing. It's fabulous! Someone spilled wine on our carpet on Boxing day and the cleaner stuff it came with took it all right up!

There's a product called spot-shot. I swear by it, we have light blue carpet. Also a little febreeze will help with the spit up odor.
