Bill Gates made his fortune by stretching "aggressive business practices" into the same territory occupied by extortionists and dictators. He took intellectual property by means that can only be called unethical, hundreds of times if not thousands. And his history of shady business practice is documented worldwide by an incredible trail of out-of-court lawsuit settlements and more than one intellectual property creator's suicide.
History will condemn the man for the personification of greed that he is, despite his ludicrous efforts to "buy" respect through his "many strings attached" charities.
Bill Gates' so-called "business" behaviors ruined many of my friends, professionally and emotionally. He single-handedly distorted the world of computing for decades, steam-rolling the masses into submission and computing illiteracy. But now there is hope, as Microsoft products lose credibility and desktop Linux gains momentum.
What is the alternative? Try burning the ISO named 'Big Daddy" from http://pclinuxos.com and experience what computing can be like without Bill Gates. Just boot it and you are there. No need for Wiindows except for proprietary format tricks by Microsoft. Please, begin your year by experiencing Software Freedom!

Yea but everybody is not computer wiz like you. Consumers don't want to how much RAM is used for flashy graphics or icons. They want something easy to use and don't want to enter commands to open a folder. This is stupidest thing I ever heard. May be that's why he can monopolize the biz so easy. Wiz like you don't know how to sell computers to normal folks and only care about how smart they are at computers.
You're missing the whole point of 'computing for masses.' I'm sure you're expert car mechanic, rocket scientist, and whatever, but people don't want to be computer experts to use one. Mac and Microsoft knew that. You didn't and still don't get it.
I'll say they're pretty smart for not being arrogant enough to say 'why can't these people just be smart enough to write their own softwares and configure their own damn computers.' And helping computing available for average folks.
Nobody threatened people with gun telling them not to enter computer OS business. Mac and Microsoft were two of few who knew the importance of it. That's why they are monopolizing the biz today. Because they got such a huge head start. Not because of popular myth that these guys are bunch a evil business giants who are out to destroy others.

No. Marketing. but, i guess you could call that computing
of a sort....how to make people happy with crap.
Better programming has been around for decades.
But, there hasn't been the marketing and the start-up
capital to get over the initial hump of defeating
MS. It is a shame. Since, most of us are forced to
use a little MS in order to just communicate with the
rest of the world. Sucks.

It's a combination of intelligence, business sense, ruthless attacks on his competitors, and choosing good people to work with him.
Part of being a good businessman is making a lot of money, but not necessarily making the best product. Your question implies it takes a great product to make a lot of money. It is actually not true. Macdonald doesn't make the best hamburgers, Walmart doesn't sell the best shirts, and Home Depot doesn't sell the best bricks. But they all make a lot of money because they sell a lot of something a lot of people like. Microsoft software is not the best, but they do sell a lot of their software (sometimes after wiping out their competition one way or another).

Bill Gates is a busines man and probably the best in the world or in the top 3 or4 anyway. He made his money because he had the market sewed up on the product.

I did hear that IBM had someone else in mind when they were hunting for an operating system. They phoned him up but he was drunk and abusive so they dropped him. Microsoft was the 2nd choice, IBM phoned them and the rest is history.
I assume this conforms to the cockup theory of history.
Google Linux in 2007, wait and see.

I agree, but he did know how to create a monopoly. truth is that IBM should have been the King of the market, but they wanted to sell 250,000 computers. Not much of a home market for this stuff.
