I am home for the holidays and I saw my brother have some Tivo type recorder. Only it wasn't Tivo. I would like to know if anybody has an alternative service like Tivo that cost less? If so, what is the service called?

Right now, there are two companies: Tivo and ReplayTV. Both cost $12.95/month.

Any other DVR that you see is offered by a satellite provider, cable provider or it is a media center computer. A satellite/cable provider monthly fee varies. For Comcast, it costs me only $5/month. A media center is 100% free besides the upfront hardware costs. No service fees.

You can subscribe to Dish and you get a DVR for free. But you have to pay five dollars a month to have it activated.
