this place is called the Counter (thats the name of the restaurant
the food is excellent -as well as the service,
the restaurant is near 29th and Ocean park in Santa Monica
its slightly differnet how you place your order
you are given a check list, of what you want on your food
lots of good choices, -you can get different toppings
etc..
the place can get mobbed so dont go at 12:00N
but go a hour earlier and you should have no problem
(we went on a weekday so I'm not sure about weekend crowds

Melisse for fine dining
The Lobster for seafood and spectacular views
JiRaffe for great food and to support a local surfer turned restaurant owner.

They are all on opentable.com so you can make a reservation there.

If you want something somewhat expensive but great food go to The Lobster the chef always changes the menus but the food is so great and you even have a view of the ocean.

for steaks, Pacific Dining Car on Wilshire
for Italian/California cuisine, Il Cugini on Ocean
for Mexican, Lare's on Pico
for seafood, Enterprise Fish Co.

(stay away from the chain restaurants, there are so many good local places to choose from)

Browse ratings for restaurants at http://www.zagat.com/

You can find different restaurants depending on what style of food you are looking for.

I hope this helps!
