Probably because the mentality that brought prosperity to Western countries is also the one that brings the kind of awareness that promotes the ideas that lead us to send aid to the less developed countries.
Also contrarily to what crazi0819 believes, when Westerner first went to Africa, the Africans had not progressed in thousands of years. They were still living in the same kind of huts and using the same kind of tools they had been using since the iron age. There were no sign of the technological advances that had been happening in the Western world even in the 16th and 17th centuries. In other words, if we had left them alone, they we still would not have invented the light bulb nor penicillin.

There are no more African countries starving. Just because the BBC found a couple of abandoned village outposts last time and Geldolf wanted to revive his career.Bingo. Where do you think most of our food comes from. I will tell you. Bananas, Coco beans for chocolate, Coffee - Kenya, Uganda, Tobacco- Kenya Uganda, Zimbabwe, Corn - All west Africa, Tea, Peanuts. Its all propaganda. If you go to the shops you can buy "English tea". But the fact is all our sugar and that kind of stuff comes from Africa including Pineapples and Apples the list is endless. And most of the Gold, Diamond, Uranium and semiconductor devices.

There is no inherent, difference between Africans and Europeans. Wherever you go in the world there will be generous people and mean people. "I'm allright Jack" is the most common human response, if it wasn't there would be no world poverty.
Majorities rule on this planet, and historically, majorities simply don't care enough to change things.
Apparently, for every £1 the First World gives in aid to Africa, £10 is taken back in unfair trade situations.
Consequently, we are as rich as we are BECAUSE Africa is as poor as it is. So we all have a duty to be globally aware and globally responsible on a political and environmental basis.
If the roles were reversed and Africa lacked the human empathy that the West does they would simply do the same as we are doing.

Well if the western world (aka Developed World) would have kept their noses out of Africa a few hundred years ago, then the African outlook may be far better. Right now the western world so riddled with guilt, has started to put a much needed band aid on the continent. The efforts need to step up to.

I'd say no. With way we've treated Africa, Aids/HIV, starvation, and genocide, etc, God forgive me, but I'd be tempted to say simply, "let them starve". Happy New Year
