Hard to say, because in Mexico City there are people and food from all over the country. On the other hand, Mexico City has the best restaurants in Mexico, so if you pick correctly you will find the real good stuff.

Is this a question or just a rant? I live and grew up in Los Angeles AND travel in Mexico all the time. I love the food in both places. As it is, Mexico City is one of my least favorite places in the country, overcrowded, polluted and the food... not so hot. There are plenty of places in the States making great, authentic Mexican cuisine. Take a little time, avoid chain places like the plague and go in with a better attitude and I'm sure you will find great Mexican food out there.....even in Texas.

You have traditional foods from Mexico City, Yucatan, Veracruz,Monterrey, Chihuahua and Sonora so there is too many foods to mention. Food from Yucatan And Veracruz for instance are not prepared with hot chile, not all mexican food are hot.
Also UNESCO named mexican food World Heritage 2 years ago.

Bacalao and Romeritos are very popular now in December.
Pollo con Mole (i call it the mexican curry with chicken)
Pozole (corn-chicken soup)
Quesadillas (tortillas with melted cheese and meat or just cheese)
Chiles en Nogada (seasonal) and Chile Relleno (chiles filled with ground meat).
We say there is lots of vitamin "T" in our food. here is why...
Tortilla soup
Tacos al pastor ( our own pork gyros ).
Tostadas (crisp tortilla w/ some meat, u add some toppings)
Tortas (sandwich with a bread similar to a baguette)
Tamales (kind of cakes with different fillings, salty: w/chicken or pork and sweet: with raisins.
Atole (hot thik drink in various flavours)
Well, this are the things you can find almost everywhere but there is more... One thing for sure, everything is fried in oil.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I dont recall a typical dish from Mexico City.

Hey you guys forgot Chile Rellenos - my favorite!
That would be Mexico's version of stuffed peppers (usually with cheese) & a wonderful red tomato sauce
