I think it's both. You can't make a generalization like that. Each soldier has a different reason for joining.

It is correct to say that American soldiers volunteer. Our American men are not stupid. They are men and men naturally want to protect and are loyal to a good cause.
Their unconsciousness meaning they are not fully aware of what they are volunteering for? Fish poop. Can this statement have been used during WWI or WWII.
Many nations know that Americans liberal media exploit most Americans. Many nations perceive and perceive well, that the general public can not sustain a war for long as we don't want to lose lives. When we are winning all is fine. When we show that we Americans are just as human as others and we have setbacks, the general public mumurs. They get a defeatedist attitude.
Once this attitude gets back to the men on the front they can become depressed and say to themselves the average American has no gut and no stomach for a fight. Our will to make something of ourselves should be given to us on a silver platter. We fight for what we believe in.
The question that possibly the American soldier's unconsciousness has led them makes us to be dummies to ourselves, which in reality is not ourselves but implanted into our subsciousness (sub) by what they hear and view in this country.
We are becoming a weak country because of people do not believe in themselves any longer. They have chosen to take the large wide road to paradise which in essence is not where they are really going, (but don't tell them that). It is the small winding and crooked road that leads to truth.
We are smart soldiers and we know what we are doing. To die for one's country is a priviledge just as it is to die for someone we love. To die to protect the rights of those protesters who wear shirts belittling out president. How much the ignorant forget.

America has a "volunteer" Army, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. This means that all Americans have the option of serving, but are not FORCED by the government in to doing so.
