Right click on my computer and choose properties, or go to control panel -> system. The amount of RAM you have should be listed in MB or GB.

Note: if you have an onboard graphics card this number may be less than what you expect. Onboard graphics cards us a portion of system RAM as video RAM. So if you see 504 MB of RAM, you actually have 512 MB of RAM with 8 MB being used for graphics memory.

Bryan A's answer seems the best, IMO.
I tried dxdiag and was surprised at how much info it displays, but on certain things , some OS's this is not useful. Better to use a web based diagnostic. And I say this for one reason, whilst I like the cool factor of dxdiag, I have never seen it before, it reports back contents of your system ( or I should say tries to) to Microsoft. And the thing is extremely detailed in what it uncovers. No wonder the WGA is such a demon.

wow, forget what everyone else is saying.

Click start, then go to run. In that box type dxdiag

a screen will appear in the middle of your desktop and towards the bottom it will say

Memory: (next to this is the amount of RAM)
it goes like this
512
1024 = 1 gig
1526= 1.5 gigs
2038 = 2 gigs
