Though I don't agree with anything to do with the KKK- I still feel that however much I hate and disagree they have a Right to Freedom of Speech- no matter how much everyone else may dislike it and find it offensive- unfortunately that is the nature in which US Constitutional right to Freedom of Expression has been interpreted.
If one extrapolates that teh KKK should be banned for what they propagandaise or say as being highly offensive, hyow then is this precedent followed? Will the Black Panthers be cesnured too? Will Christian fundementalists, Jews, Muslims, Hispanics, Chinese, Southerners all be censured for their views about white oppression, ungodliness, support for Israel, support for Palestine/criticism of US policy, Latinisation as a beneficial phenomenon/US laziness, imposition of Chinese characters supplanting Latin ones in formerly Anglo areas?
The question then is, not should they be banned, but what else will- and will it be applied universally and equally?
My opinion, is that it won't and various braying minorities will be silenced, but still others remain and perhaps more vocal.
Personally, I think that the US remains, despite recent events, one of the few lamps of western civilization- especially with its Freedom of Speech, which is fairly unique.
As soon as the US starts eroding it's Rights to Freedom of Expression, to cater for various pressure or interest groups, no matter how noble their cause, other nations will follow suit.
Less democratic and liberal societies, especially in Europe and Asia, which have cultural precedents and traditions of unquestionable respect for authority/nobility will use the US precedent to impose stricter penalties on expression deemed insulting to the ruling class. Thus, these politicians will be immune from public scrutiny and accountability and we will return to a very unpleasant situation of police states.
Summarily, I don't endorse anything KKK promotes, but however much I resent them, I will fight to allow those people I despise most, say what I loath most, to the death- for their Right to say it.
That is the true spirit of Freedom of Speech.

Yes, they do, but unfortunately, they still have freedom of speech and expression, so long as they aren't actually killing anyone. Freedom of speech applies to everyone, whether we like their opinions or not.
I, for one, do NOT agree with the KKK, and if it was up to me, they would be completely destroyed.
However. The problem is not with the KKK as an organization, necessarily. The problem is what leads to people adopting such a hateful ideology: Ignorance. That's it. Ignorance. Can we ban ignorance? We wish.
If I was a politician, I wouldn't do anything to ban their activities. Instead, I would pass laws that KKK members couldn't have children, and if they did, the mental and emotional abuse they subject their children to would be enough to have their children taken away.
The only reason the KKK still exists is that it continues to feed off of itself. KKK members raise their children to be white supremacists. Target that, you take away their main weapon.
Next law would be to restrict when and where they can recruit.
After that, start with children in preschool and kindergarten. Every single year, they will receive tolerance classes. Encourage Black History, Women's History, Asian History, Arab History. Make world history a mandatory class. Make world religion mandatory. Make ethics mandatory. And give it to them EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Pound it into their heads: All people, regardless of race, are equal. All people, regardless of race, deserve respect.
Do this, and in a few generations, racism will nearly be an obsolete term. Children will be marched through museums, wide-eyed, as they're told about those times a long, long time ago when America had racism, and slavery. That long, long ago time when groups like the KKK still had some clout in some areas of the country. Imagine, some day, there might be a time when our children, or our children's children, can't even conjure an image of times like these, and questions like yours.
Maybe some day Martin Luther King Jr's Dream can come true.

The KKK started out as an accountability group... That's right... The Klan would be the group that wifebeaters, child abusers, social degenerates, etc. would have to answer to.
There are many stories of men who were set straight by the Klan. One in particular was a paralyzed farmer whose son liked to booze and party with women of low morals. He was going out and spending lots of his father's hard earned money leaving the father with high debts and little money.
One night after his partying, the Klan dragged him out into the field, ripped the shirt off his back, tied him to a tree and horse whipped him. The man never drank another drop the rest of his life. He became his father's best worker.
Many of wifebeater ended up the same way. They never lifted a finger against that woman again.
I don't know exactly WHEN the Klan went racist, but it did. Sorry leadership makes for the destruction of a good institution.

Yes, they demean all that is good and decent.
I don't think they can be banned in the USA, however, a stiff tax on organizations that restrict member ship by race, gender or religion might help a lot.
BTW: I think that James B is full of it...

You obviously do not understand our Constitutional Protection of Freedom of Speech.
We are prohibited from enacting any law prohibiting freedom of speech.
The KKK has as much right to say what they want to as anybody else. In the markeplace of ideas, they're selling some very stale merchandise. We're free to decide for ourselves that their crap is nothing we want anything to do with.
If it were banned, it would only serve to drum up curiosity and would attract more losers to it than it does now.
Besides, the KKK is a dying, outdated organization with few real adherents. Nobody takes them seriously. Few fear them.
Its kind of the opposite of whats going on in Europe, where "hate-speech" is illegal, yet anti-semitic attacks directed at Jews are at an all-time post-war high.

I agree, it does demean other decent Caucasians. To have that much arrogance to think you are better than others purely because of the colour of your skin is just STUPID! I think membership to these groups should be called a hate crime because you must have hate in your heart to join. Freedom of speech is one thing but outright vilification is something else all together.

umm,,hmm how about law that protects people from violence. oops already there.
how about increase penalties for hate crimes..oops already there.
so i guess the only other logical step, to ban something like that, is to dismantle the US Constitution.
give bush time, he's working on it.
but to answer your question, no i don't think they demean anyone anymore or any less than any other race biased group does.
