Look, not trying to be a dildo here, but is comics and animation REALLLLLY the place for this question? Chin check, dude.
Anyway, to give you an answer. BitTorrent is a protocol - think of it as a program - that is open source, meaning it is free, and all the tech specs on it are available to the public to develop and tweak and refine as they see fit. Which is why there are many BitTorrent clients floating around out there, the "official" BitTorrent itself being one of them.
Now, as far as I know, every one of these programs are free. Or they should be. If you paid for BitTorrent, or any other client, then you got hosed. Plain as that. So never, EVER pay for a BitTorrent client.
As far as which one to pick, I'm sure every person has their own personal preference. Mine is UTorrent. Its a small, non-intrusive client that works exceptionally well, and has a great support community to boot. Whichever one you pick, be aware that the actual BitTorrent client itself is near-universally regarded as one of the worst ones available. So do some Google research and draw your own conclusions.
Hope this helps, and good luck! NEVER PAY FOR TORRENTS!
Peace

The clients are generally free. Alot of material is free. Alot of material is NOT free. Be aware that downloading copyrighted material can get you in hot water.

Yes it is.
I use AZUREUS.
It's awesome.
Here's a Bit Torrent search engine:
http://www.bittorrent.com/
But hey, if you want to watch a show or cartoon or whatever... try THIS website first: http://alluc.org/
If it's not there, THEN try the Bit Torrent.
