What kinds of elements are in 5 everyday objects? What are 2 properties of metalks that make them useful materials for electrical wiring? What substances are 10 common objects made of? Based on Silicon's place in the periodic table, are compounds a reasonable choice for an alien life form (why or why not)? Note: When I say common or everyday objects, I mean objects like pens, pencils, erasers, paper, cups, plates, etc. I appreciate any help I can get! Thanks for trying!

Everyday objects:

ICE - the solid form or water is composed of the elements of Oxygen and Hydrogen

GASOLINE - this is a mixture of roughly 400 different compounds distilled from crude oil. You have heard of hydo-carbons? That's what these compounds are...lots of Hydrogen and Carbon molecules.

GLASS - made largely of silica (which is also known as the compound Silicon Dioxide), is comprised of the elements Silicon and Oxygen.

CHLORINE BLEACH - is mostly water with a bit of choline gas disolved into it. So you have Oxygen and Hydrogen in the water and then you disolve another element, Chlorine into the water.

TABLE SALT - is simply known as Sodium Chloride. It is simly molecules comprised of the elements of Sodium and Chlorine.

You will find Carbon in most naturally occuring things or things that once were living. That is why we are referred to in science fiction novels etc... as carbon based life forms. Things such as wood, paper (which comes from wood) cotton, wool, leather, and sugar - amongst many other things.

This should give you a start. You will learn more by doing research on your own. Try this website and type in some things at the bottom and see what you learn. Try some things like "steel", "bronze", "nylon", "vinyl", "rubber", "concrete" you may be amazed at what you find. If it doesn't copy - type in "Periodic table of the elements" into yahoo.
