The union purchased 32,000 drums during the war but early in the war due the bad press when one of the boys was killed started using older boys. Before this they were as young as 12 and afterwards they were 16 and up. Musicians on both sides doubled as stretcher bearers. The South had far less man power so the drummer stayed young and got younger. The dummer was important as voice commands could not be heard and they were used to kept the Army moving they beat to assembly; foward march, rereat.

nicely i could think of that the yank Revolution is reported as that and not as a civil war as a results of fact we weren't probably area of england yet a sequence of colonies searching for independence. We have been attempting to alter into an autonomous us of a as detrimental to taking on Britain itself. The Civil war although composed of two separate countries became extremely between 2 factions of a similar us of a. The union purpose became to hold the southern states that had left the union. the US never extremely recongnized the south as yet another us of a, nor (i've got faith) did the different us of a. interior the yank Revolution France known us. Had the Confederacy gained the war it might have then replace right into a revolution in the event that they desperate to stay a separate us of a and not overtake Lincoln's government. Had they taken over the different government then it could have nevertheless been a civil war. The defination of civil war is that the two waring factors come from a similar soverign us of a.

The sad answer is that the drummer boys of both the Union and Confederates did not have anything to defend themselves. Being in the front of the forces, many were trgeted. Many were killed or wounded. President Lincoln ordered the Union forces to discontinue the use of drummer boys because so many had been killed.
Here is a quote from a web page from "Lost Indiana"l, on one drummer boy;
". . . Drummer boys were in use before the Revolutionary War to maintain a “pace” or rhythm for marching or charging a line. By the time of the Civil War their use had started to decline, and in 1862 President Lincoln ordered that drummer boys be discontinued in order to stem the tide of young boys being killed in the war. The drummer boy was often out in front of the advancing troops, and the enemy often aimed at them in order to cause the advancing line to fall out of step."

I don't think they actually did anything. They just marched and drummed.
