The textbooks in Japan, is definitely not the same size as in America or Canada!! The ones in the US are huge! Japan have small textbooks, that students buy, and bring them to school each day. Also, the books on the subject of math and Japanese are usually sold separately by semesters, but people buy all of it in the beginning of the year.

The notebooks, I'm not sure what the anime characters use, but they are flat and small, in general, about 30 pages, and people don't use the one with the spiral rings. Instead, they use the one where it's binded with strings, so that it doesn't bother when writing. However, the ones for practicing the kanji have boxes written in them. By the way, one of the popular brand of notebooks in Japan is called Campus (I love them!). It comes in variety of colors, and students (girls) would decorate the cover!

The typical notebook is the same size as an American or Canadian notebook. Japanese notebooks meant for writing may have boxes in them (like graph paper), so that each character can be written in its own box. It keeps it looking neat, especially for young Japanese students.
