what's the type of connection you use? Is it Dial up or LAN or what?

Make sure your connections are secure. Double check your security settings in Tools. Some low class internet sites will mess your settings up, run a virus scan and so on. If it's still new, you can call Dell and/or your ISP for help. Either can walk you through the problem quickly and easily.

You might have an internet service that you have to log on to. That message means that the ethernet cable is hooked up, but you're not getting an IP. Try resetting the router or modem that you get internet from.

reseat connections (disconnect reconnect the physical cables if any)

Power cycle your router and cable/dsl modem (shut off for 30 seconds and power back up, modem first router second)

fully shut down the computer for 30 seconds then power it back up.

try swapping a "known working cable" with the one on your pc (known working means something on another computer that works right now)
