Go to the Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices.
Open and select the Volume tab on top. In the center of that window is a box to check that says "Place Volume Control in the Task Bar."

Have fun

Hi there, Do you currently have any sound (Start/Exit Windows, etc.) coming through? Perhaps the sound card has a conflict or is lacking drivers (the greyed-out options makes me think that). Go into the Device Manager and look for your sound card, make sure it's there and working properly. If it's disabled, try to enable. If there's a conflict with another device, try to resolve. Also, you can delete it from Device Manager, then restart; that often restores a sound card to functionality after a conflict or being disabled.
