Hello,
He is my opinion ( I was born and raised in Montreal....and still living there).
Here are the trendiest neighborhoods: Plateau Mont-Royal Mile-End, Quartier Latin and the McGill Ghetto are probably the nicest /trendiest places to live...they can be expensive BUT also affordable, many students find apartments in these areas so it is possible.
Also Rosemont is nice but more french, N-D-G is nice to and more english. The downtown area is also nice to live in but is more expensive.
If you want much cheaper apartments you have to go further form downtown...Ahuntsic, Côte-des-Neiges, Villeray and Hochelaga-Maisonneuve have very nice apartements for lower prices...but you are either further from downtown or in not as nice neighborhoods than the firsts that I mentionned...
Montreal is not a dangerous city, there are no places I wouldn't recommend because they are too dangerous...but, I wouln't live in Montreal-North, Centre-Sud and St-Michel...they are more 'rough neighborhoods' but I woudn't say dangerous...I guess it's a personnal opinion...
I don't know if you know that...but in Montreal we all move on the same day (well the big majority), they are apartments available all year round, but most are vacant on July 1st. The advantage of getting a place at other times of the year is that you usually get a better deal for it because it's low season...and less (much less) people are looking for a place so it is less crazy. (ex. I got my place ( a 6 rooms + basement and backyard in Plateau Mont-Royal for 1000$/month...in April, in July it would have been at least 1500$...) In the high season a place gets rented in about a day, so you have to be fast...right now you can take you time and shop around more...It is hard to get scamed because the rents are regulated here, so lanlords can't boost the price of a flat just for the heck of it or because they are changing tenants...some of them still do...but just keep in mind that it is possible to find a place for a resonable price. At this time of the year, prices are usually lower.
Here IS the BEST place to look for adds...
The Hour is THE place everyone looks for an apartement...

the northern side of Montreal is reasonably priced and the people are friendly. if you have doubts about something, ask to speak to a neighbor or ex-tenant or just look for a different place. sometimes you can find a nice apartment that the owners have converted or added on to their house. that would be pretty safe. good luck.

You know It's nice to live around the areas close to university and try to find flats around downtown for you to have access to cool places! Look around Sherbrooke St., Atwater, St. Marc, The plateau, or around Lionel-Groulx station or probably Nun's Island.

I like the areas close to the following stations: Atwater, Lionel-Groulx, Villa Maria, Snowdon, CDN.
The ones I will not accept to live around are: Jean-Talon, Berri-Uqam, St Laurent and Parc, I find them very dirty and noisy.
Anyways, this are just my preferences.
