With regard to UK - yes it is the New Year no matter what religion or culture.

Sorry to be pedantic - but it's after midnight in UK, and therefore it is no January 1st 2007 !

It's New Year's time around the globe...someplaces it is New Year's Day and others, like where I am it is still New Year's Eve. It is a time, not a religion...

Whether anyone dislikes it or not, Midnight is still midnight and the New Year is still the new year.

You can totally ignore it if you wish, but that changes nothing really (other than the calendar).
