I don't think a complete waste of money because people like them.
As far as pollution, there's not enough to worry over, from my perspective. I can say in my area the odour was hanging in the air. Prolly due to moisture.

They're no more a waste of money than anything that is used once for entertainment purposes only.

What makes you think the smoke causes cancer? They're not powered by cigarettes, y'know.

PS to "David" ... 12 rockets @ $150 each = $1,800 not $6,000.

Yes, if you spend more than $35.00 on fireworks. My wife, our son and I buy an assortment at our local grocery store.

We have a neighbor two blocks over that spends $6,000.00 every 4th of July on fireworks. $150 for a rocket. He buys 12 of them.

That is just spending money in a stupid way.

Of course they are a waste, far better to spend the money on something of value: charity, children in need.
Imagine those starving in Africa.. Put food in front of them, and fireworks.
I know which they would choose !
I think they should be banned A Lazer display is just as effective without all the flashes and bangs, causes no pollution, and is cost effective. But I still think it better to spend on charity

the smoke and all the carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulphur etc goes into the atmosphere adding to the hole in the ozone layer but too many taxes are paid on this junk for our ever-green governments to stop it
