The only sure way is to pull the pan. I got all into engine codes one time and I bought a Chevy motor code #3970010. The old "010" block the every body wanted. Well, when I got home and tore it down, it had two bolt mains in it. I even saw this motor being pulled from a Corvette. Later found out it was not the orginal motor for that car. Joke was on me.

you really can't tell unless you pull the pan down but most truck engines are the 4 bolt.

you can tell by the VIN then look this number up in the chevy code book or on line
