Historically, wealthy women had maids to dress them. The buttons were put on the other side because the person doing the buttoning would be facing them. It caught on as fashion, and is still done today for no worthwhile reason at all.

Historically, (around the 1800's) Men escorted women by linking their left arms to the woman's right hand. This allowed for the mans right hand to be free for placing inbetween the buttons on their coat.

This photo illustrates the overall idea I'm trying to convey, but it doesn't exactly show the pose I'm describing.

As other people have answered, it is a historical thing, (the way the buttons look when you go to button their clothes). Also, when dressed one way, it's a blouse, (womens).

Some people need a little help figuring out if they are wearing men's or women's cloths. So Manufacturers make it easy. Oh no, there are no buttons on underwear.

Mens are buttoned that way because when all carried a sword it was easier to throw the coat back so the sword could be drawn.

back in the midevil times or something way back then.. it was easier for the house maid to dress the girls if the buttons were on the left than if they were on the right.
